Snowboarding or skiing? Which is harder?

banner4_20090606045509 Snowboarding or skiing? Which is harder?

hey guys, so i been boarding for 2 1/2 years now. i have never skiied. I have boarding friends and skiing friends though. Just come back from Val’ disere and Tignes, and have been to Chamonix twice in the past. These are "expert" ski areas for snowboarders.

I’ve had a couple of arguments with my skier friends about which is more difficult, and from my observations it seems to be that it’s boarding. However, all my friends claim skiing is a lot harder. I must have fallen 5-10 times every day of the holiday, as did my friend who’s also a boarder. Of all the boarders i watched (200+) approx 50% of those fell at least once on the slope i was riding with them. Of all the skiers i saw (about 5000) i must have seen about 20 falls all holiday.

Now either one must assume that the skiers were just better, or that there is a difference in difficulty.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with both, and can shed light on it. In future i will try skiing, and perhaps i will be proved wrong, but for now, i find it almost impossible to except that snowboarding down the average Red run with normal conditions (ice/moghuls) is easier for a boarder.

I will make an exception thatvridng down slush is easier for snowboarders, as skiers tend to have a difficult time. I could also make a similar comparison with powder, in that snowboarders tend to be more fluid in their motion.

Finally, Snowboarders can get up easily, have falling leaf at their disposal, and seem to be more capable of maintaining speed across flat areas.

However, skiiers can traverse/cross flats with much more ease, don’t need to ever take off their bindings, and can use snowplow to get out of any situation. They also ride on ice much easier (from what i see).

If anyone rides both, and can offer a less biased view.. please indulge me..

first time skiing?

Hi folks!

well, in 8 days time I am going to Tignes in France for my first ski trip!

Was wondering if anyone has any good advice for me, as this will be my first time?!

thanks xx

Travel from Paris to Lyon?

What would be the fastest and the most inexpensive way to travel from Paris to Lyon in March? I will be going to Tignes (ski), flying into Paris first. The trains cost almost 300E for a round trip. As that is my only rail trip, passes would not be of help, I presume. Ryanair and Easyjet do not fly direct. By road, takes almost 5 hours or so, I guess. Help, please!!

What do you wear for Summer Skiing?

As an experienced skier I feel daft asking this but I’m going skiing on the glacier in Tignes next week and I’m not sure what temperature/conditions to expect. I presume that as with Winter Skiing, conditions can change but what are the range of temperatures I can expect? Should I expect to wear full ski gear most of the time and sometimes tie my jacket round my waist – or should I expect to see most people in t-shirts ? Thanks

I am booking a ski trip but dont know where do look, can anyone help?

Hi, I am going to book a skiing trip to france, ideally tignes or chamonix at either the end of january or start of march but i don’t know where to look to get a package holiday cheap flying from newcastle.

Tignes Ski Resort

Tignes is a famous ski resort in French Alps linked to Val D’Isere. Tignes comprises 5 Villages; Val Claret, Tignes le Lac, Le Lavachet, Tignes Les Boisses and Tignes-les-Brévières. The first three are close together at 2100m and Les Boisses and Les Brevieres are further down the valley, above and below the dam respectively. Les Brévières is an old village whereas all the others were created as part of the Dam construction or development of the ski resort. All villages are part of the ski resort known as Tignes.

After the loss of the old village it was decided to develop a ski resort at the higher lake (Le Lac). This was surrounded by a bowl that is ideal for skiing and is headed by the Grand Motte glacier. The resort was developed largely during the 1960s and the building style reflects what was regarded as good building design at that time. In recent years the town has worked hard to improve the look of the new villages with some success.

The lift company STGM are continually investing to improve the quality of lifts in the resort and queues are mostly avoided by the use of fast 6- or 8-person chairs. They have also invested over the past few years in snow making equipment to create good bases for the pistes even in the early season.

PLACE TO VISIT

The bleak architecture in the town has somewhat detracted from the atmosphere in the past, but the situation is now improving. Of course, the views of the Alps from the resort are spectacular. It is partly for this reason that Tignes is not only a winter resort for skiing, but a summer one for hiking, mountain biking , summer skiing on the glacier ; it has won the sporting town of france 2008

WHAT TO DO

Winter Sports – Tignes is in the “Espace Killy” skiing area, which means that just one pass is needed for access to the slopes around Tignes, Val-Claret and Val D’Isere; for the 2006/7 season, a six-day pass will cost €180 (£135; $220).

The resort has some 2300km of pistes, of which 26km are served by snowmaking equipment. 15% are green, 46% blue, 27% red and 12% black. The resort is always renowned for the amount of snow it gets, though – a forecast of “rain up to 2000m” means snow to village level, i.e., fresh snow on all pistes.

Ski Accommodation Tignes is plentiful with some chalets, hotels but mainly ski apartments in Tignes.

Summer Sports – Mountain Biking with two of the main lifts in the resort open for hikers and mountain bikers you have the choice of 8 different marked routes to decend, with a difficulty ranging from easy to difficult, although this would not be a resort for complete beginner mountain bikers.

Hiking – The resort is also much suited to hiking; in summer, the snow at ground level has disappeared and the Sun can actually be quite pleasant.

Ski Resorts Offers complete guides of world’s top ski destinations also offers cheap hotel booking.
